Small-scale parallel implementation of fast wavelet transforms

چکیده
We look at the use of parallel techniques for Fast Wavelet Transforms, focusing particularly on how to make best use of a very limited (and, perhaps, variable) number of available processors. Efficient algorithms for parallel FWT have been established in the case where the lengths of the vectors to be transformed and the number of processors are both powers of 2. We show that a näıve extension to arbitrary vector length and number of processors may give poor performance or, in some cases, be impossible. We present new algorithms for the distribution of matrix elements between processors that overcome these difficulties. We have implemented our algorithms on a local area network of inexpensive PCs using MPI, and present experimental results demonstrating significant improvements in performance of FWT calculation.

P2E-DWT: A parallel and pipelined efficient VLSI architecture of 2-D Discrete Wavelet Transform
Discrete Wavelet Transforms has surpassed its counterparts due to its attractive properties, and hence been adopted by image processing algorithms. However, with the emergence of real-time resource constrained embedded imaging platforms, DWT manifests as a bottleneck. This article presents a hardware implementation for 2-D DWT. An area-efficient, parallel and pipelined architecture is proposed ...
متن کاملHigh performance computing for wavelet and wavelet packet image coding
The use of high performance computers for wavelet and wavelet packet based image coding is discussed. After a short description of wavelet and wavelet packet methods the existing literature concerning vector, parallel and VLSI wavelet transforms is reviewed. In the following an algorithm for wavelet packet best basis selection on moderate parallel MIMD architectures is introduced and an impleme...

Discrete transforms are of primary importance and fundamental kernels in many computationally intensive scientific applications. In this paper, we investigate the performance of two such algorithms; Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), on the Sony–Toshiba–IBM Cell Broadband Engine (Cell/B.E.), a heterogeneous multicore chip architected for intensive gaming applicat...
متن کاملDesign of a Pixel-parallel Feature Extraction Vlsi System for Biologically-inspired Object Recognition Methods
This paper proposes a biologically-inspired feature extraction method, which consists of coarse region segmentation by a resistive-fuse network and feature extraction by Gabor wavelet transforms. Their pixel-parallel VLSI implementation based on the pulse modulation circuit architecture is described, and measurement results of Gabor filter operation by a test LSI chip with 1-D 20-pixels are pre...
